| Subject: Obama continues controversial Memorial Day tradition, begins new one? Mon May 25, 2009 7:10 pm | |
| - Quote :
- Monday, Obama decided to continue a controversial presidential tradition of honoring Southern Civil War soldiers by sending a wreath to Arlington's Confederate Memorial, according to the White House.
But the president decided to start what may become a new tradition by sending a wreath to the African-American Civil War Memorial at Vermont Avenue and U Street Northwest in Washington. Link

| I think it is a good thing that he continues this tradition. I also like that he started the new one. | |

| Good idea by Obama... Should not be any controversy at all... The Civil War included many issues other than slavery... | |

| I agree completely. Some people either forget or don't want to acknowledge that African-Americans also fought for the Confederacy. | |

| I certainly don't see a problem with it and am glad that President Obama has done this. I don't think there should be any controversy with recognizing these soldiers and war.
After all, right or wrong the civil war was part of American history and americans (both white and african american) fought and died in that war. I certainly do not agree with the idea of slavery at all. I don't think that anyone with any sense at all does. Slavery was a terrible thing. That does not change the fact that this was an american war and americans fought and died in that war.
