Appeals court sides with Redskins on trademark

Quote :
WASHINGTON – The Washington Redskins won another legal victory Friday in a 17-year fight with a group of American Indians who contend the football team's trademark is racially offensive.
The decision issued Friday by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington doesn't address the main question of racism at the center of the case. Instead, it upholds the lower court's decision in favor of the football team on a legal technicality.

Personally, I'm fed-up with groups like this.

Would calling a native american a "red skin" be offensive?

"Hey, there, red skin! What's your name?"

A 2002 Sports Illustrated survey reports:

Asked if they were offended by the name Redskins, 75% of Native American respondents in SI's poll said they were not, and even on reservations, where Native American culture and influence are perhaps felt most intensely, 62% said they weren't offended. Overall, 69% of Native American respondents -- and 57% of those living on reservations -- feel it's O.K. for the Washington Redskins to continue using the name. "I like the name Redskins," says Mark Timentwa, 50, a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes in Washington State who lives on the tribes' reservation. "A few elders find it offensive, but my mother loves the Redskins."

The Annenberg Public Policy Center National Annenberg Election Survey 2004 (conducted in 2003-04), reports:

Most American Indians say that calling Washington’s professional football team the "Redskins" does not bother them, the University of Pennsylvania’s National Annenberg Election Survey shows.

Ninety percent of Indians took that position, while 9 percent said they found the name "offensive." One percent had no answer. The margin of sampling error for those findings was plus or minus two percentage points.

So, we should change it because of of few whiny people?

Should I be offended by the "Fighting Irish" since I'm of Irish ancestry?

I think it's not the use of most words themselves that are offensive, but the intentions behind them. In this case, I don't find the use of the word "red skin" offensive.

However, I do find them not to be my favorite football team. Grin

Amen Mongo! All of that is not slamming the native americans at all. I am part indian myself and do not see it as an insult to anyone, rather is really a tribute to the history/tradition of that way of life and their people.
Groups like that just have way too much time on their hands and are imo a joke.
Why don't they protest the Cowboys? There was a group that used violent methods at times Laughing . All of that is just insane.

I agree Annie and as for my favorite team it is basically the Packers and Browns along with anyone that plays the Ravens. Grin
